TETFund Reports More Than 137 Sponsored Students Abroad Fleeing their Obligations

The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Sonny Echono, appeared before the House of Representatives Ad-hoc committee investigating the alleged mismanagement of N2.3tn tertiary education tax by TETFund on Tuesday. During this appearance, Echono disclosed that over 137 students sponsored abroad by the fund have absconded, refusing to return to Nigeria after completing their higher education programs.
Echono expressed serious concern over the significant number of absconders and the potential consequences of their actions. He stressed the need to strengthen existing regulations to ensure that beneficiaries of TETFund’s scholarships fulfill their obligation to return to the country upon completing their studies.
The Executive Secretary emphasized that the scholarship program requires beneficiaries to come back to Nigeria and contribute their expertise to the nation’s development. He mentioned that the program includes a guarantor who may face hardships if the sponsored student fails to fulfill their commitment to return, as the guarantor becomes responsible for repaying the expenses incurred on their behalf.
